Ionians backs cut loose again

Hull Ionians Hawks 63 West Park Leeds 0
The Hawks concluded their league programme with another spectacular performance, after last week’s demolition of Harrogate. The win takes them up to a very creditable second place in the Yorkshire Premier League. A number of players were rested or at Twickenham so Linus drafted in a couple of trial players in the form Jake Goodison from Scunthorpe and Harvey Clappison from Hull Kingston Rovers.
The Hawks showed great ball retention from the kick off and before Leeds had touched the ball Keane Naylor burst through from his own half to score a great individual try. To show it was no fluke Keane repeated the act this time running round behind the posts to give Ben Dearing an easy conversion to make it 12-0 after 4 minutes. Next on the scoreboard was Harvey Clappison who showed his strength to force his way over near the posts to give Ben Dearing another easy conversion. Andy Barrass then broke down the blind side and fed Simon Kench who showed great hands to put Mike Davey over in the corner. The forwards decided to get in on the act and second row Andy Gleadow was forced over the line by the rest of his pack. There was just time left before half time for Keane Naylor to complete his hat trick with another individual try converted by Ben Dearing to take the half time score to 36-0.
The second half was not quite as fluent as the first but the hawks continued to score at regular intervals. Harvey Clappison scored his second try showing good support play and then Jake Goodison got the try his all-round performance deserved. Keane Naylor got his fourth try of the game to underline his enormous potential. Andy Barrass crossed the line before he had to leave the pitch with an injury to be replaced by coach Linus Penna. Flanker Raymond Coates scored the eleventh and final try which was a good reward for his usual all action display and a special mention must go to the human tackling machine Josh Peterson.
Also it was very gratifying to see the West Park boys not only stay and watch the six nations climax but stay and take part in the fun and games of the “battle of the teams”
